Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s former sporting director, has turned down a homecoming to Anfield.
Mike Gordon, President of Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG), called Edwards to discuss the possibility of his taking on a senior role with the club or within FSG, allowing him to oversee the reform that is taking place after Jurgen Klopp decided to call it time on his Liverpool career.
This will lead to a massive overhaul at Merseyside as the star players are aging too- Virgil Van Dijk, Mo Salah and the likes of Mané, Firmino, Coutinho who were part of Klopp’s Liverpool 1.0 are no longer at the club either. However, Edwards made it clear throughout the chat, which took place over the weekend as per The Athletic, following the shocking announcement on Friday that manager Jurgen Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, that he would not be returning to the club.
Edwards stepped down in May 2022 and was succeeded by Julian Ward, his longtime assistant. However, he stepped down as sporting director at the end of the 2022-23 season. Jorg Schmadtke was hired on a short-term deal to help Liverpool with its 2023 summer transfer business, but the German will leave once this month’s market closes.
Schmadtke’s departure was disclosed shortly after Klopp declared that his almost nine-year reign will expire at the end of the season. Edwards took a year off after leaving Liverpool, but returned to football in 2023, co-founding Ludonautics, an advising firm, with the club’s former director of research, Ian Graham. The firm provides its talents and experience to ownership groups and teams in order to drive improvement and success both on and off the pitch.
Edwards saying NO to Liverpool has now les to FSG exploring other alternatives for the position in a massive rebuild era which can be make or break for the Reds.
