In a surprising move, U.S. President Joe Biden, 81, has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race. This decision follows mounting concerns within the Democratic Party about his mental sharpness and ability to effectively challenge Donald Trump. Biden announced on X that he will complete his term, which ends in January 2025, while focusing solely on his presidential duties.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.
Biden’s withdrawal paves the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to potentially lead the Democratic ticket, marking a historic first as she becomes the first Black woman to do so. Despite not mentioning Harris directly, Biden’s exit raises questions about potential challenges from other senior Democrats and the broader party’s strategy moving forward.

The announcement comes after Biden’s poor performance in a televised debate against Trump, intensifying public and private pressure from Democratic lawmakers and officials to reconsider his reelection bid. The Democratic Party now faces an uncertain path as it navigates the upcoming election cycle without Biden at the helm.
“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this,” Biden wrote.
By dropping his reelection bid, he clears the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to potentially lead the Democratic ticket, marking a historic first as she becomes the first Black woman to do so. Despite not mentioning Harris directly in his initial announcement, Biden’s subsequent tweet underscored his support for her candidacy.
It remains unclear whether other senior Democrats will challenge Harris for the party’s nomination or if the party will open the field for nominations.
