FC Bayern defeated 3-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in Saturday’s Bundesliga top match. The host team seized the lead in the first half and kept on capitalizing chances from there on.
FC Bayern fell 3-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga‘s premier match on Saturday. FCB loanee Josip Stanišić opened the scoring for the home side in the first half. Alejandro Grimaldo doubled the lead after half-time, and Jeremie Frimpong added a third in injury time.
The Bavarians started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Dayot Upamecano, Eric Dier, and Minjae Kim in the defence. The midfield consisted of Noussair Mazraoui, Aleksandar Pavlović, Leon Goretzka, and Sacha Boey, while Leroy Sané, Harry Kane, and Jamal Musiala led the attack.
First Half
Bayern had greater possession of the ball at first, thanks to Leverkusen’s strong defence FCB couldn’t net. Amine Adli tested Neuer before Goretzka fired at the other end. After Adli was denied by Neuer, a low cross from Andrich found Stanišić at the far post, who scored from close range. Neuer saved a Nathan Tella shot, and Florian Wirtz’s follow-up was blocked in an excellent display of shot stopping.
Bayern struggled to score against the home team’s strong defence, with Neuer denying Jonathan Tah and Mazraoui drawing a stop from Lukas Hrádecký who returned for Leverkusen in the goal. Neuer saved again against Adli, and Piero Hincapie fired over before Upamecano made an important stop against him. Sané shot wide as Bayern went into the break behind by one goal.
Second Half
Munich started well when play resumed, but were undone when Grimaldo raced clear following a one-two with Tella and beat Neuer. Musiala made a mistake, prompting manager Thomas Tuchel to substitute Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Müller for Upamecano and Pavlović to improve the game. Grimaldo attempted to beat Neuer straight off a corner, but the FCB captain was alert.
Sané and Musiala’s efforts were thwarted before Mathys Tel took over from Goretzka. A Musiala cross narrowly missed the sliding Müller at the far post. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Raphaël Guerreiro replaced Musiala and Boey, providing further reinforcements. Kimmich saw an effort stopped as Leverkusen fell behind in the final moments. Frimpong rattled the post on a counter, but he eventually added a third when the Dutchman netted the empty net with Neuer up for a corner in additional time.
The result means Bayern encompasses 50 points from 21 games, five fewer than their opponents on Saturday. The Bavarians return to Champions League play on Wednesday, travelling to Lazio, while Leverkusen face Heidenham on Saturday.
